About AI in Grimoire
Dungeon Grimoire includes optional AI features. This page explains what they are, which third-party providers can be involved, how AI output is marked, and what “off” means. It exists to meet the transparency requirements of the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, Article 50) in language a person might actually read.

The short version
- AI is off until the campaign owner turns it on. New campaigns start with the choice unmade, and unmade means off.
- Everything the AI generates is recorded as AI-made at the moment of generation, and shown with an AI badge to anyone who didn’t generate it.
- Generated images and music carry invisible, machine-readable markers that identify them as AI output.
- Switching AI off later never quietly removes the labels from things made while it was on.
- Running your home game with these tools puts no AI Act duties on you. Personal, non-professional use is exempt; the obligations on this page are ours.
What uses AI (once enabled)
Text. Draft generators for NPCs, monsters, items, spells, factions, locations, quests, traps, puzzles, encounters, roll tables, and downtime outcomes (Interlude); session recaps and scene descriptions (the Chronicler); and short speakable lines for NPC voices. All of it is presented as a draft you accept, edit, or throw away.
Images. Scene art and portraits (the Chronicler and entity art), stylized map looks (Cartographer), and mini portraits, group portraits, and disguises (Simulacrum).
3D. Simulacrum sends a stylized source image to an image-to-3D service to sculpt a printable mini.
Music. Generated ambience tracks in the Soundboard.
Search. Some search and recall features use AI embeddings (a numeric fingerprint of text) to find related content within your own campaign. Nothing new is generated.
A note on the text polish tool. The enhance feature rewrites text you wrote yourself (grammar, tone, tightening). Because it assists your writing rather than generating content from a prompt, it falls under the AI Act’s standard-editing exemption and its output is not marked as AI-generated.
What does not use AI. The Illuminator, despite the arcane name, is classic image processing: colour grading, texture, vignettes. No model is involved. The same goes for everything else not listed above; dice stay dice.
Which providers can be involved
Depending on the feature and your campaign’s settings, a generation request goes to one of:
| Provider | Used for |
|---|---|
| OpenAI | Text, images, search embeddings |
| Anthropic | Text |
| Text, images, search embeddings, music (Lyria) | |
| fal.ai | Images (FLUX models by Black Forest Labs) |
| Meshy | Image-to-3D minis |
Keys work in one of three ways: platform credits (Grimoire’s own provider keys), bring your own key (stored encrypted, used server-side), or local-only mode, where your browser talks to the provider directly and our servers never see your key or your prompts.
What each provider receives, where it is processed, and under which legal safeguards is covered in the privacy policy.
How AI output is marked
- In the app: every accepted generation stores a provenance record (provider, model, timestamp) with the content. An AI badge is shown wherever the viewer isn’t the person who generated it, including the Player Portal. Human edits flip the record to “edited”; they never erase it.
- Images: an invisible XMP metadata marker (the IPTC
trainedAlgorithmicMediadesignation) is embedded in every generated image, and re-embedded after resizing, so the marker survives our own thumbnailing. - Music: every generated track carries SynthID, Google’s inaudible audio watermark, applied by the model provider before we ever receive the file.
- Text: carries its provenance record in the app; recap text inserted into documents keeps an AI marker inside the document itself, so it survives editing.
- 3D minis: the source image the mini is sculpted from is marked as above, and the mini is presented as AI-made throughout the feature.
Consent, and what “off” means
- Enabling AI on a campaign is an explicit choice by the campaign owner. The dialog states plainly that outputs can be wrong or can resemble existing work, and where your data goes. Your acknowledgement is recorded.
- Features that work from someone’s portrait additionally require a likeness acknowledgement, enforced on our servers rather than only in the interface.
- With AI off, the AI interface is hidden and every generator refuses the request server-side. Off is a wall, not a curtain.
AI images on this website
If this site ever showcases artwork generated inside a real campaign, that happens only for campaigns whose owner opted in, and the image is visibly labelled AI-generated where it appears.
