D&D CHARACTER ART & PORTRAITS

Portrait Gallery

Every character in your campaign can have a portrait in Grimoire's own painted style, and every image you generate lands in one gallery you can search. A cast that looks like a cast, not a wall of grey tokens.

THE GREY TOKEN PROBLEM

Your campaign has thirty characters in it and they all look like a circle with a letter in it.

Faces do a lot of work at a table. Players remember the innkeeper with the scar, and they forget "the innkeeper", even if you described the scar twice. It's not that your description was bad; it's that a picture is doing something a sentence can't, six weeks later, when someone half-remembers a name.

The usual fix is a folder of images scraped from a dozen sources, which mostly produces a cast that looks like a collage: three anime portraits, two oil paintings, a photograph, and one that's very obviously a character from a video game everyone recognises.

Grimoire's answer is a single painted house style, applied to everyone. A cast that looks like it came out of the same book, because it did.

What the gallery is for

One house style

A painted look that holds across the whole cast, so your NPCs read as one world rather than four stock-art sites.

Everyone gets a face

Heroes, NPCs, villains, monsters, items, locations: anything worth showing can carry an image.

One gallery

Every image you've made, in one searchable place, instead of scattered across the entities that own them.

Portraits and disguises

An NPC can hold a second face for when they're not being themselves.

Straight onto cards

The portrait is what prints when the NPC becomes a Card Forge card.

Bring your own

Upload art you commissioned, drew or already own. The gallery doesn't care where an image came from.

SAY IT PLAINLY

Yes, it's AI. And yes, you can switch it off completely.

Generated art is contentious and we're not going to be coy about it. Some tables want a portrait for every NPC in thirty seconds; some tables want nothing to do with the current wave. Both are entirely reasonable positions to hold.

So it's a switch, and the switch is real. Flip AI off and every generation button in Grimoire disappears: no nags, no "just a sprinkle of magic", no asterisks. The gallery keeps working as a library, uploads keep working, portraits keep printing onto cards. You lose the generate button and nothing else.

WHERE THE PICTURES END UP

A portrait isn't a decoration. It's a component.

An image attached to an NPC follows them around. It's on their entry when you open it mid-session. It's on the card when you print them inCard Forge. It's what your players see in thePeople tab when they scroll back through everyone they've met.

That last one is the pay-off. Six months after the marsh-witch, a player opens their portal, sees her face, and remembers the whole scene before they've finished reading their own note.

Questions a DM would actually ask

Is this AI-generated art?

The generation side of it is, yes, and it's entirely optional. One switch turns every AI feature in Grimoire off, and when it's off the generate buttons don't appear anywhere. The gallery, uploads, portraits and card printing all keep working exactly as before.

Can I upload my own art instead?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Commissioned portraits, tokens you already own, a photo of a sketch: attach it to the NPC and everything downstream, including printed cards, uses it.

What does "one house style" mean in practice?

Generated images come out in Grimoire's own painted style rather than whatever a generic model felt like doing. The value is consistency: a cast of thirty NPCs that look like they belong in the same book, instead of a collage of unrelated aesthetics.

What's the disguise image for?

NPCs can carry a second portrait for when they're appearing as someone else. Show the party the disguise; keep the real face to yourself until the reveal.

How do the AI credits work?

Pro includes 1,500 generation credits a month, which covers portraits, stat cards, read-aloud text and the rest. On the free tier and with AI switched off, everything non-generative still works. The gallery is a library first.

Why not just use a tokens site?

You can, and the upload path means you still can. What a separate site can't do is keep the picture attached to the NPC, follow it onto a printed card, and put it in front of your players in their portal when they meet the person.

Give the innkeeper a face.

Or don't. Turn AI off and use your own art. Either way, stop describing a scar to people who will not remember it.
